Convicted serial killer Bruce McArthur was allegedly assaulted in prison and hospitalized, a police source told Global News.

The source said the 67-year-old’s injuries were serious enough to warrant hospitalization.

The alleged assault occurred in the evening on Thursday, April 11 at Millhaven Institution, a maximum security facility located east of the Village of Bath, Ontario, according to the source.

Global News learned the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an assault, but would not confirm if McArthur was the victim.

“I can confirm that the Penitentiary Squad is investigating an assault that took place on Thursday, April 11, 2019. The investigation is ongoing and we can’t confirm any name in order to protect the identity of the victim,” Sgt. Cynthia Savard told Global News in a statement.

A spokesperson for Correctional Services Canada (CSC) told Global News on Sunday that due to the Privacy Act, they were unable to provide details on specific cases.

However, on Monday morning a CSC spokesperson provided an updated statement which said in part, “I can confirm that an inmate was escorted to an outside hospital as a precautionary ‎measure following an altercation.”

McArthur was given a life sentence on February 8 with no eligibility for parole for 25 years for murdering eight men between 2010 and 2017. The men had ties to Toronto’s gay community.

The former landscaper had pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder before the sentencing.
