EDMONTON – Mads Sogaard turned aside 49 shots as the Medicine Hat Tigers edged the Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 on Saturday in Game 1 of their Western Hockey League first-round matchup.

James Hamblin and Hayden Ostir supplied the offence for the Tigers

Josh Williams broke up Sogaard’s shutout bid when he scored at 17:58 of the third for the Oil Kings.

Dylan Myskiw turned aside 25-of-27 shots for Edmonton, which host Game 2 of the best-of-seven set on Sunday.

BLADES 3 WARRIORS 1

SASKATOON — Max Gerlach scored his second goal of the night at 10:05 of the third to give the Blades a 2-0 first-round series lead over Moose Jaw.

Kirby Dach also scored for Saskatoon. Nolan Maier kicked out 21 shots for the win.

Carson Denomie found the back of the net for the Warriors. Adam Evanoff stopped 27-of-29 shots in defeat.

RAIDERS 6 REBELS 4

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Aliaksei Protas and Sergei Sapego had two goals and an assist apiece as the Raiders beat Red Deer to take the first two games at home in their first-round matchup.

Brayden Pachal and Ozzy Wiesblatt also scored for the Raiders, who got 19 saves from Ian Scott. Forward Brett Leason was ejected at 3:50 of the second for checking from behind.

Brandon Hagel paced the Rebels offence with a hat trick. Chris Douglas also scored while Ethan Anders made 25 saves in a losing cause.

HURRICANES 4 HITMEN 1

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Jake Leschyshyn had a three-goal performance as the Hurricanes toppled Calgary for a 2-0 lead in their first-round set.

Nick Henry also scored while Carl Tetachuk turned aside 32 shots for Lethbridge.

Dakota Krebs had the lone Hitmen goal. Jack McNaughton made 28 saves in defeat.

THUNDERBIRDS 4 GIANTS 1

LANGLEY, B.C. — Nolan Volcan had a goal and two helpers and Roddy Ross made 39 saves as Seattle evened its first-round series 1-1 with a win over Vancouver.

Simon Kubicek, Sean Richards and Andrej Kukuca rounded out the attack for the Thunderbirds.

Jadon Joseph scored for the Giants. Trent Miner stopped 24-of-27 shots in a losing cause.

SILVERTIPS 4 AMERICANS 3

EVERETT, Wash. — Dustin Wolf turned aside 28 shots as the Silvertips held on to beat Tri-City for a 2-0 lead in their first-round set.

Robbie Holmes, Martin Fasko-Rudas, Jake Christiansen and Gage Goncalves scored for Everett.

Krystof Hrabik, Nolan Yaremko and Aaron Hyman had goals for the Americans. Beck Warm made 35 saves in defeat.

WINTERHAWKS 5 CHIEFS 3

PORTLAND, Ore. — Josh Paterson struck twice and Joel Hofer made 23 saves as the Winterhawks toppled Spokane to even their first-round series at a game apiece.

Lane Gilliss, Mason Mannek and Matthew Quigley also scored for Portland.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Luc Smith and Adam Beckman scored for the Chiefs, who got 30 stops from Bailey Brkin.

BLAZERS 4 ROYALS 3 (OT)

VICTORIA — Jermaine Loewen scored at 5:14 of the extra period as Kamloops edged the Royals to take Game 2 and draw even in its first-round series.

Kyrell Sopotyk had a pair of goals and Brodi Stuart also scored for the Blazers. Dylan Ferguson had 39 saves for the victory.

Kody McDonald struck twice and Carson Miller had the other Victoria goal. Griffen Outhouse turned away 31 shots in defeat.
