When some Okanagan and Boundary students head back to class next fall, they will have new playground equipment to enjoy.
It’s part of a $5-million cash injection from the provincial government that will build 50 playgrounds at schools around the province.
Two $105,000 accessible playgrounds will be installed at central Okanagan schools: one at Rutland Elementary in Kelowna and another at Shannon Lake Elementary in West Kelowna.
In the north, Okanagan Len Wood Middle School in Armstrong is getting $90,000 for a standard playground.
In the Boundary region, Rock Creek’s West Boundary Elementary will also get a new accessible play structure.
The education ministry said the schools were picked “based on greatest need.”
“Priority is given to schools where there is no playground, then to schools where the existing playground is aging,” the ministry said in a media release.
The province expects to keep investing in new play equipment so schools still in need of an upgrade can apply again for 2020.
