Councillors in Tay Township are looking to fill the vacant position of deputy mayor by direct appointment.

The position was left vacant after the passing of Jim Crawford in December.

Councillors observed a moment of silent reflection in tribute to Crawford on Wednesday before formally declaring the office of deputy mayor vacant.

Township officials say councillors considered filling the vacancy by appointment by selection, a by-election or direct appointment.

“After discussing the merits of each option, Council voted to fill the vacancy by direct appointment,” said Tay Township mayor, Ted Walker. “We’re pleased to offer the position of Deputy Mayor to Gerard LaChapelle.”

According to the release, LaChapelle was elected as councillor in Ward 2 for the 2014 to 2018 council term and was a candidate for deputy mayor in the 2018 election.

The township says correspondence will be sent to LaChapelle requesting a response by Feb. 5.

If the appointment is accepted, council would pass a by-law to appoint LaChapelle on Feb. 6 and he would be sworn in as deputy mayor on Feb. 13.
