Montreal woman formally charged after posting photo on Instagram

MONTREAL — The lawyer for a woman formally charged Wednesday with harassing a police officer using Instagram called the accusations against his client “a bit exaggerated.”

Defence lawyer Denis Poitras made the comments Wednesday after his client Jennifer Pawluck was arraigned in Quebec Court on charges of harassment and intimidation of a police officer.

After entering a plea of not guilty, Poitras said he will ask that Pawluck, 20, be tried before a jury.

Pawluck was arrested after she posted a photo on Instagram of graffiti depicting Montreal police spokesman Ian Lafrenière with a bullet through his head.

Montreal police said there was more to it than that, with intimidating postings on other sites.

Poitras said he just received the evidence and had not yet a chance to review it.

Pawluck was accompanied in court by several people wearing red squares — the symbol of last year’s student protests against tuition increases at universities.

She is to return to court May 24 to set another date.
