Winnipeg’s iconic Portage and Main intersection was blocked Thursday afternoon by a protest in support of Indigenous pipeline resistance in British Columbia.
The Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Rally, Round Dance and Art Build took over Portage and Main at 4 p.m.
Winnipeg police blocked off access into the area and re-directed traffic as hundreds of protesters formed circles, chanted and waved banners in the intersection.

The group broke up as darkness fell, after about 45 minutes. Traffic flow resumed through the intersection around 5 p.m.
The event is one of many solidarity rallies across Canada and beyond over the past week in opposition to the controversial construction of a natural gas pipeline over Indigenous lands.
Winnipeg police said officers and cadets will be on scene to ensure safety and orderly traffic flows.
