NB Regiment Remembers War of 1812

The 8th Canadian Hussars have a long and storied past in New Brunswick. Today, the regiment celebrated its 165th anniversary in front of Moncton City Hall. The regiment is one of the longest serving armored regiments in Canada.

“To have it now is to commemorate the contributions of both the city of Moncton and the village of Dorchester towards the War of 1812,” said Don Bourque, the regiment’s commanding officer.

Members paid homage to local cavalry members that existed before the regiment. They say the cavalry helped defend the British Empire from American invaders.

“It was the pre-Hussars who were on out on horseback delivering messages…you know checking out positions…spying on the enemy that never existed but always prepared,” said Bourque.

Residents who attended the ceremony say it’s important to show respect for the military and their contributions to the country.

“I believe the military gives us a great contribution to this world so we can remain free,” said Duncan MacLeod.

“Its important to celebrate the sacrifices the men and women of our country do,” said Kendra Stokes.

“There were lessons learned and we should not forget,” said Michel Leblanc.

Despite recent federal defence cuts, residents here say there’s still a future in Canada’s military.

“Its the good opportunities, the learning experiences,” Mathieu Leblanc said.

Julie Leblanc agrees.

“The organization itself, the military, the discipline, the fun activities, the opportunities … the list goes on.”
