Construction of passing lanes is underway on a busy stretch of highway north of the Battlefords.

The two sets of passing lanes on Highway 4 between North Battleford and Cochin aim to improve road safety.

“We know the construction period will be an inconvenience when travelling between Cochin and the Battlefords, but it will be short-term and will ultimately prove to be a benefit to all especially those of us who frequently make the trip,” Cochin Mayor Harvey Walker said in a statement.

Volumes on the highway range between 3,700 and 6,900 vehicles daily, another reason for the passing lanes.

“With a number of lakes and the growing economy in the area, these passing lanes will improve safety for travellers along Highway 4,” Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said in a statement.

“As construction work progresses, please respect the work zone, follow the posted signage and slow down.”

Drivers are being reminded to keep an eye out for flag persons, expect delays, and to be aware of sharp drop-offs, loose stones and fresh oil.

There is also a 3.5 metre vehicle width limit in effect during construction of the $10 million passing lanes.
