Public can catch glimpse of Stanley Cup in New Hamburg Thursday morning

For those looking for a chance to be within grasp of hockey’s ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup will be in New Hamburg on Thursday.

The trophy will be on display at the original downtown arena facility at 251 Jacob St. in New Hamburg between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

As NHL champions this year, each member of the Washington Capitals gets to spend a day with the trophy and the team’s video coach, Brett Leonhardt, is using the opportunity to take the Stanley Cup to his hometown.

“Everyone who has ever laced up skates dreams of someday winning the Stanley Cup,” Leonhardt said in a statement. “For me bringing it back to where it all started is a big part of that dream and I am excited to share the Cup with the people of Wilmot and surrounding area.”

This year, the Stanley Cup will travel around the globe with stops in Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and the Czech Republic, as well as New Hamburg.

Leonhardt grew up playing minor hockey in New Hamburg before he advanced to higher levels in Cambridge and Kitchener.

The team’s video coach was also hired by the Capitals over the phone as he was passing through New Hamburg on his way to a visit with his parents in Grand Bend.

There is no cost to enter the arena for the viewing and visitors will get an opportunity to get a picture with the Stanley Cup.

There will also be a draw to win a signed Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals jersey with proceeds going toward New Hamburg minor hockey.
