Gap in services for addiction patients

The Okanagan’s only residential drug and alcohol treatment centre will soon be closing its doors.

In January, Crossroads announced that after 37 years crushing debt and budgetary shortfalls had caught up with it.

The facility officially closes its residential treatment centres Thursday. Its detox beds will close at the end of June.

On Tuesday, however, Interior Health issued a Request For Proposals, seeking a service provider to replace Crossroads.

The RFP calls for 20 residential treatment beds to be put in place by June, along with between 8 to 12 detox beds.

However the representative for 60 workers laid off by Crossroads thinks Interior Health could have done more to keep Crossroads afloat, at least until the new service provider was up and running.

“We don’t think the IHA did enough to negotiate to protect that service and maintain Crossroads,” said HEU representative Tracie Mundy.

“These are skilled workers that have specifics skills for dealing with addictions and they’re going to be out looking for other jobs,” she said.
