Work continues on a Habitat for Humanity project on Saskatoon’s east end, and some Global Saskatoon personalities were there.
Volunteers from the station grabbed their hard hats and boots to work on six units Tuesday as part of Habitat Saskatoon’s Women’s Build initiative.
“Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization – so without our volunteers, we don’t build houses, they’re what make our houses affordable here in Saskatoon so our partners and our volunteers are a huge part of what we do,” Habitat Saskatoon’s director of resources Shannon Durand said.
“This build (on Tuesday) is for six families — all low-income, working families — here in Saskatoon … We have 12 units altogether, so we’re going to have 12 families with over 30 children under the age of 10.”
The project on Slimmon Road is expected to be finished by the end of this year or in early 2019.
Women’s Build is not about excluding men, but rather it’s about including women. In Habitat Saskatoon’s comfortable environment, women learn construction skills and are made not to feel intimidated.
The initiative empowers women to build Habitat homes, enabling them to make home ownership a reality for families and fight poverty.
