Funnel cloud weather advisory for Saskatoon
Environment Canada has issued a funnel cloud weather advisory for Saskatoon and parts of central Saskatchewan for conditions favourable for the development of funnel clouds on Wednesday.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and early evening along a surface trough situated over southern Saskatchewan with funnel clouds possible as showers and thunderstorms develop.
These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms and are normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.
Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous.
They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances, so it is important to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously.

Stormy Tuesday
Environment Canada has confirmed a weak landspout tornado touched down south of Yorkton near Otthon between 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. CT on July 3.
The agency received preliminary video where a small debris cloud could be seen at the base of the funnel, however there have been no reports of damage.
The tornado was given a preliminary rating of EF-0, which is the lowest rating for tornadoes in Canada, for twisters that can have wind speeds up to 130 km/h.
In addition, numerous funnel clouds were spotted across central Saskatchewan including ones in Langham and near Dalmeny.
There was also some significant hail reported south of Prince Albert in St. Louis, where so much fell it looked like winter.
Saskatoon Forecast
Wednesday
It was a wet and dreary start to the day in Saskatoon with light rain all morning as temperatures fell back to 11 degrees to start the day.
Showers put a damper on daytime heating with the mercury only getting up into the low teens late in the morning as a rainfall warning for 30 to 50 millimetres of rain Wednesday was issued for the Hudson Bay area.
The low pressure system that brought in the wet weather pulls off out of the area during the afternoon, allowing the rain to ease and temperatures to rise up further into the teens.
Wednesday Night
Clouds clear out of the area Wednesday evening as the risk of funnel clouds subsides and temperatures fall back into single digits overnight.
Thursday
High pressure builds in across the area on Thursday, bringing back blue skies and sunshine during the day.
Temperatures will also be on the rise with an afternoon high back up in the mid-20s as a breezy southerly wind kicks in.
Friday
A big upper ridge accelerates heating on Friday with the mercury soaring up into the low 30s in the afternoon.
Mostly sunny skies will stick around during the day as warm southerly winds remain breezy right into the afternoon.
Weekend Outlook
A cold front will gradually mark south this weekend, but not after one more warm, potentially 30 degree day on Saturday under a mix of sun and cloud as winds pick up.
The front will swing through on Sunday and drop daytime highs back into the mid-20s under mostly sunny skies before we warm back up again early next week.
