A man was arrested after police say he assaulted a dog on a highway off-ramp in Bowmanville on Monday night.
Durham Regional Police Service responded around 8:20 p.m. to the Highway 401 off-ramp near Bennett Road after receiving calls from witnesses who stopped to aid an injured golden retriever.
The witnesses told police they saw a man assaulting the dog on the side of the roadway.
Officers arrived and said they located a dog with “life-threatening injuries.”
“The dog was taken to an emergency animal clinic,” police stated. “The suspect was arrested and charged.”
Jonathan Dunbar, 23, of Mississauga was charged with cruelty to an animal. He was released on a promise to appear — a court date was not provided.
