Ontario reaches funding deals with three racetracks

TORONTO – Ontario’s opposition parties say they’re not impressed with the government’s latest transitional funding agreements with racetracks.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says her government has reached deals to keep three more tracks operating, despite the loss of slot machine revenue.

She says the money will preserve jobs, but the horse-racing industry will be smaller in the future.

Several racetracks planned to shut down after the government cancelled the program that provided racetracks with 345-million dollars a year.

N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath says the new agreements won’t end the job losses in the horse-racing industry.

Tory Monte McNaughton is also rejecting Wynne’s claim that the deals will save jobs.

He says the damage is done and thousands of jobs will be lost because of the Liberals’ decision to end the slots revenue-sharing program.

Flamboro Downs, Georgian Downs and Fort Erie are the latest racetracks to ink deals with the government.

Wynne says that brings the number of racetracks with funding agreements to nine.

The government is still negotiating with six others.
