A 76-year-old woman is expected to make a full recovery after falling through ice near Belwood, Ont. on Tuesday morning while trying to save her dog from the frigid water.
Wellington County OPP said officers received a call from a resident who reported that her mother had fallen through the ice of a private pond near Sideroad 30 and Wellington Road 26.
She stepped onto the ice for her dog before falling through herself, according to police.
Const. Marylou Schwindt said the first officer on scene waded into the water and pulled the woman to safety.
She was treated by Guelph-Wellington Paramedics Services and transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
The dog made it out of the water on its own, unharmed.
Schwindt warned residents to be careful of thin ice, especially this time of year.
Schwindt added that if residents see someone who has fallen through the ice, they should call 911 immediately.
