Editor’s note: Durham Regional Police originally told Global News shots were fired against police officers. Late Monday afternoon, police issued a correction saying an officer fired a shot at the suspects’ vehicle while attempting to stop it.
Durham Regional Police say two of three armed bank robbery suspects have been arrested after a pursuit on Highway 401.
A spokesperson for Durham police told Global News officers were notified of a bank robbery in Clarington at around 1:30 p.m. Monday. A pursuit took place on the westbound lanes of Highway 401, the spokesperson said. Police didn’t report any injuries.
Officers initially said shots were fired at officers. But police later issued a correction on Twitter saying an officer, in an attempt to stop the vehicle, “discharged his gun during a high-risk stop.”
Police said the vehicle used by the suspects was found abandoned on Highway 401 near Salem Road in Ajax.
Officers said two guns were recovered.
Police, including the canine and emergency response units, said two suspects were arrested as they continue to search for a third.
