When it comes to many residential intersections in Edmonton, slipping and sliding is a common theme.
But starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the city dispatched additional resources to deal with the problem.
“We’ll be using chip, which is like a larger aggregate, as well as sand,” explained Janet Tecklenborg, a director with the City of Edmonton’s infrastructure operations.
The mix will be 25 per cent aggregate and 75 per cent sand.
Over the last week, weather conditions have been all over the map. On Feb. 13, there was freezing rain in Edmonton.
The resulting icy residential road conditions haven’t gone unnoticed.

Watch below: (From February 2018) A freezing rain warning was issued for Edmonton and the precipitation made the city’s streets and sidewalks very slippery. Sarah Kraus reports.
In addition to spraying the aggregate/sand mix, the city will also look at grading with serrated blades if the weather warms as forecasted.
“So, we’re looking at also scarifying — just a different type of blade that has teeth, so it can scarify the road so it gives it a little bit more traction,” Tecklenborg said.
Anyone with concerns about icy roads in their neighbourhood is asked to contact the city at 311.
