Councillors move to rescind bylaw requiring single-file cycling

TORONTO – Two city councillors are pushing to rescind a pre-amalgamation bylaw that forces cyclists to ride single-file on city streets.

The motion introduced by Councillor Karen Stintz seeks to rescind bylaw 950-201(A) noting that prior to amalgamation, Etobicoke was the only municipality to have a bylaw requiring single-file cyclists.

The former cities of Toronto, North York, Scarborough, East York and York had no such by-law.

The motion suggests that cyclists could ride alongside one another without creating congestion.

Stintz’s motion is part of a process of consolidating various pre-amalgamation by-laws which are still enforced.

The motion will be considered by city council on February 20.
