CanoeKayak Championships – Day 1

Wascana Racing Canoe Club had great results at the first day of competition at the 2010 Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships.  Many athletes moved on to Friday’s finals in the events that were raced today.  Kia Byers, Tiera McLeod, Megan Gibson, Simon Fense and Daniella Zemlak did very well placing first or second in their K-1 events.  

Team boat crews winning their heats included the Juvenile Women’s K-4 crew of Megan Gibson, Julia Folk, Zoe Hanson and Daniella Zemlak, the Juvenile Men’s K-2 200 crew of Simon Fense and Cooper Reis, Junior Women’s K-2 1000m crew of Stephanie Robertson and Fiona Vincent, Junior Women’s C-4 crew of Zara Hanson, Alyssa Kohl, Ashley Holowatuk and Gina Soparlo and the Open Women’s K-4 crew of Kia Byers, Megan Gibson, Tiera McLeod and Stephanie Robertson.

Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club athletes who did well were Trista Neilly who won single boat event heats in the Junior Women’s K-1 500m.  She also teamed up with Olivia Dyck to win their K-2 1000m heat.  Jarret Kenke and Mykel Kowaluk both won their Midget Men K-1 200m heats as well as their K-2 1000m heat.

Competition at the national championships begins on Thursday at 8:00 am with the senior events being raced first. These heats will be filled with Olympic and world class athletes.  Racing continues through the day.  Finals will run on Friday and Saturday.
