A snowfall warning is in effect for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt.

“A persistent southwest flow of moisture and falling snow levels will produce 30 centimeters of snow by Friday morning along the higher elevation areas of the route,” said an alert from Environment Canada.

Drivers have been urged to be careful as weather in the mountains can change quickly and create dangerous road conditions.

The snow is expected to taper off Friday morning but could continue at a lower intensity throughout the day.

ICBC said drivers should think twice before taking to the roads in winter weather.

“If they’re not confident about driving, they should take transit, carpool, take a taxi or work from home,” the insurance provider said.

Environment Canada recommended that drivers check road conditions before they head out and to use chains and winter tires.

ICBC said drivers should watch for black ice, which can happen in areas where packed snow and car exhaust freeze fast.

“If you drive over black ice and start to skid, ease off the accelerator, and look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go,” ICBC said on its website.

“Don’t brake! This will make the situation worse.”
