Unionized workers at BC Place stadium drop picket line as a show of goodwill

VANCOUVER – Almost 72 hours after picket lines went up around BC Place stadium in downtown Vancouver, the union says those lines have been removed.

A release from the BC Government and Service Employees Union issued just after 7 a.m. says picket lines have been immediately suspended as a show of good will.

A day-long strike on Monday escalated to an indefinite walkout when the union said stadium operator, BC PavCo, refused to return to mediated talks.

Those negotiations resumed Wednesday afternoon, but BCGEU pickets continued into Thursday morning.

The union says another mediated session is planned and enough progress has already been made to warrant removing the picket line.

Workers are seeking a wage increase and improved provisions covering job security and contracting out. (The Canadian Press)
