A Hamilton high school student has been rushed to hospital after being struck by a vehicle while on her way to school.

Police say the 17-year-old girl suffered severe head trauma when she was struck while trying to cross York Boulevard near Caroline Street at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary School student was in critical condition when taken to hospital.

The vehicle was travelling east on York Bouelvard and was in the left turning lane at the time of the collision.

The Hamilton police collision reconstruction unit is investigating.

Traffic was asked to avoid the area for a period of time, but all lanes have since reopened.
