It was the early morning hours of Sept. 8, 2005 and closing time had come and gone at the former CD’s Bar on Hamilton’ Ottawa Street.
Hamilton Police say many patrons were still milling about in the parking lot, when a gunshot rang out, claiming the life of Michael Parmer.
Parmer, 22, was one of a group of five who had travelled to the Ottawa Street nightclub from Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Twelve years later, his mother Dorothy Harris, was on hand to hear police announce an arrest indicating that she’s relieved that “justice has finally been served.”
Charged with first-degree murder in the case, as investigators continue to look for two other suspects, is 32-year-old Jermaine Dunkley of Toronto.
Detective Sgt. Steve Bereziuk has told a news conference at Hamilton’s Central Police station that Dunkley was a resident of Hamilton in 2005.
Bereziuk has also thanked members of the community for “finding the courage in bringing new information forward” which he says has led to the arrest of Dunkley.
Investigators acknowledge that the case had gone cold, until they issued a plea for fresh information back in August, as the unsolved murder was nearing its 12-year anniversary.
