Broken window causes glass to tumble to the street in downtown Halifax

A broken pane of glass caused quite a scare in downtown Halifax on Thursday.

The pane reportedly shattered just before 3:30 p.m. from a building near the corner of Hollis and Duke Streets, sending pieces of glass tumbling to the sidewalk.

There were no injuries in the incident but passersby told Global News that pieces of glass came close to hitting pedestrians.

The cause of the broken pane is not yet known but the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) says it’s going to look into the incident.

“This is not a building currently under construction or renovation,” said Brendan Elliot, a spokesperson with the HRM, in an email. “In this case, we will be following up to satisfy ourselves that appropriate measures are taken to ensure everyone in the area remains safe.”

The municipality will also look at determining the structural integrity of the building’s remaining windows.
