Calgary police hope the public can help them identify a man who grabbed a 13-year-old girl as she was walking to school in West Springs.

Police said the girl was walking along 89 Street S.W., between Wentworth Terrace and 9 Avenue S.W., at about 8:45 a.m. when the man grabbed her arm. Officers said she “pulled away” and ran to the school, where she notified the principal who called the police.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) said in a statement on Thursday that the incident was “concerning” to them and they are urging parents to talk to their children about “ways to protect themselves.”

CPS suggests walking in pairs, staying in busy, well-lit areas and not wearing earbuds or headphones when walking alone. If you are suspicious of anyone, they add, “flee the area, or scream to draw attention.”

Police say the man involved in this incident was 6’1” tall and clean-shaven, wearing a black hoodie with a zipper and black or blue sweatpants. Investigators say he had his hood pulled up and that the victim described him as disheveled and dirty with several holes in his hoodie.
