FV PHarma Inc. has gotten the official OK from Health Canada, and will soon start growing marijuana at its new facility in Cobourg.
“Friday the 13th was very lucky for FV Pharma,” company president Thomas Fairfull said.
Whitby-based FV Pharma took over the former Kraft food plant about five years ago but the space sat empty for years while the company worked to get its medical marijuana production licence from the government. That paperwork came through on Friday.
Fairfull said they hope to produce 4,000 kilos of pot per year.
“We’re probably starting with between 12 and 16 strains,” he said. “We’re targeting certain ailments.”
Right now, the company is operating 25,000 square feet of space and are looking to hire about 200 people. Fairfull said they hope to expand to 300,000 square feet within a year, and grow their employee list to 1,200 workers.
Cobourg Mayor Gil Brocanier said it’s the kind of development the town likes to see.
“That’s what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to promote economic development in Cobourg, and this is certainly a great boost to economic development,” he said.
FV Pharma hopes to have its first harvest ready for shipment by February.
