A new smartphone app Cortège will look to promote walking and social interaction in Montreal.

The app will only be accessible for those making their way along the 3.8-km Promenade Fleuve-Montagne, or River Mountain Walkway.

“It’s a work of art that uses mechanisms that come from alternate reality gaming,” Étienne Grenier, Cortège co-founder, said.

Within the app, users will have the choice between exploration or mission modes.

Grenier explains that by selecting the exploration mode users “will go into an immersive sound experience where they will go through waves of sounds that are geolocalized around the city of Montreal on the Promenade Fleuve-Montagne.”

While the mission mode will be a different experience where participants will come together and will be asked “to do missions.”

“You really have to engage with it so you have to play along,” Simon Laroche, Cortège co-founder, said. “It’s not a game, but you have to play along in order to get the most out of it.”

Cortège becomes available to the public on Thursday.
