IN PHOTOS: Hurricane Maria leaves Puerto Rico in utter devastation

Puerto Rico was left in devastation after Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on the U.S. territory, cutting power to the entire island, flattening homes and causing massive flooding.

Maria hammered the island when it made landfall as a Category 4 storm Wednesday with winds nearing 250 km/h, the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years.

In the capital of San Juan, trees and power lines covered roadways while many streets remained flooded as a result of the storm.

All of Puerto Rico was under a flash flood warning on Thursday as the tail end of the storm could bring another 10 to 20 centimetres of rain, bringing the storm’s total to nearly 90 centimetres.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said there was one death reported so far: a man struck by a piece of lumber hurled by high winds.

“It’s nothing short of a major disaster,” he said in a CNN interview.
