Hours before a show at London’s Centennial Hall, American comedians Kathleen Madigan and Lewis Black were giving fans around the world a guided tour of London — and the narration wasn’t pleasant to the Forest City.

Just coming out of lunch at the Ale House, a downtown pub, Madigan started streaming on Periscope, a live video service owned by Twitter, of the duo’s walk to and through their hotel, the Delta London Armouries.

“It all looks kind of normal…Everything is kind of off,” Black said of the city before entering the hotel.

Black and Madigan favourably noted the Holiday Inn Express down the street, and the DoubleTree by Hilton London (which, Madigan said, “looks like North Korea”) before entering the Delta to proceed to their second-floor suites, situated in the repurposed armoury’s turrets.

Black likened his room to that of a hospital and took aim at a cupboard door that had unpainted spackle filling a hole. Madigan critiqued the stained carpet, which she said looked like a murder scene.

“Seriously, why don’t we go down to the Holiday Inn Express?…It can’t be sold out,” Madigan said to Black, upon seeing the hotel out of the window of her suite. “We don’t need fancy, but this is strange.”

Madigan’s video came just a few hours ahead of the London stop of her and Black’s 49th Parallel tour.

The 18-minute-long video attracted more than 7,500 views, and ample chatter around London, with many accusing the comedians of being unkind to their host city. Others said the comics were simply doing their job, even if it came at the expense of London’s metal trees and the hotel’s decor.

But not in on the joke was Delta general manager Gerry Champagne, who called the video and guest experience “unfortunate.”

Champagne said the hotel is in the final stages of a massive renovation, and the suites in which Madigan and Black stayed are the last to be redone. Renovations on those rooms started Monday, he said.

“Those are going to be the best rooms in the hotel. They (have) Victoria ceilings. They’re beautiful rooms. There’s 15 of those rooms and they’re going to be unbelievable.”

He hasn’t spoken to the comics directly, but did reach out to the show’s tour manager to respond and apologize personally to the concerns raised in the issue, which Champagne said are “valid.”
