Meanwhile, in the Cuban capital of Havana, people were warned to stay off streets because of flooding that could persist for the next two days.

Waters reached about 600 metres into the city, Civil Defense Col. Luis Angel Macareno said on Saturday.

There were, however, no reports of deaths.

The storm nevertheless left a trail of damage that provides an ominous portent of what Americans could face when the hurricane reaches the U.S. mainland.
