Marauders drop home opener against Mustangs

The McMaster Marauders lost their OUA football home opener Saturday afternoon, falling 29-14 to the Western Mustangs.

Starting quarterback Andreas Dueck completed just 7-of-12 passes for 35 yards in the first half and engineered only four first downs as Mac trailed 16-7 at the break.

Jordan Lyons had the Marauders’ lone touchdown in the first half, scoring on one yard with 11 seconds left to go in the second quarter.

Jackson White replaced Lyons to start the third quarter and went 8-of-13 for 103 yards.

White also ran the ball 10 times for 97 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that cut Western’s lead to 19-14.

But that was as close as Mac would get to the 3-0 ‘Stangs.

Mustangs’ QB Chris Marchant went 11-of-19 for 189 yards and threw one touchdown, a 44-yard strike to running back Alex Taylor, who also led the game with 99 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Receiver Dan Petermann caught six passes for 22 yards to become Mac’s all-time leader with 153 catches. McMaster Hall of Famer Ryan Janzen held the record of 150.

1-1 McMaster hosts the 3-0 Ottawa Gee Gees on Sept. 16.
