A two-alarm housefire in downtown Toronto has sent one person to hospital with serious injuries.
It happened at a home on Florence Street near Queen and Dufferin streets, where one person was pulled to safety from a balcony.
District Fire Chief Stephan Powell with Toronto Fire tells Talk Radio AM640 that there was one victim who was recovered from the home: “The person was rescued from a second-floor balcony and taken to Toronto General Hospital. It was an extremely hot fire on the second floor and we had to align in the building and got it out fairly quickly.”
Powell also says: “There is only one injury reported so far and fire crews worked really hard to get the blaze out as quickly as possible.”
Approximately 45 firefighters were at the scene battling the flames just after 12 p.m. Saturday.
According to paramedics, the victim is a 25-year-old woman who was sent to hospital with smoke inhalation.
There are reports that the fire started in a bedroom after flames caught on a mattress.
It’s not known if the Ontario Fire Marshall has been called to the scene.
