CALGARY – Police have released the identity of a man stabbed to death near the Drop-In Centre, this weekend.

Police say 42-year-old John Gordon Walmsley was found suffering from several stab wounds around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Staff from the Drop-In Centre who saw the man stumbling toward their building provided first aid assistance until emergency crews arrived.

The victim was rushed to hospital in critical life-threatening condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.

An autopsy has confirmed Walmsley died as a result of stab wounds.

Police believe the victim may have been involved in an altercation before being stabbed.

“We are speaking with several people in the downtown east side, trying to determine why exactly this happened,” says Staff Sgt. Grant Miller.

Officials have confirmed Walmsley was not a client of the Drop-In Centre, but say he might have been a client at other social agencies.

Drop-in Centre staff provided police with a copy of the surveillance tape from Sunday, but police are still appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Walmsley’s death is Calgary’s fifth homicide of 2013.
