A Toronto transit driver has been charged after a senior was fatally struck by a bus in Scarborough last month.

Toronto police said Wednesday that a 58-year-old Markham man, which they did not identify, was charged with careless driving and starting from a stopped position not in safety.

Kamadchipillai Sivaloganathan, 71, was pronounced at the scene after being struck by a bus on the morning of July 18 on Eglinton Avenue East near Midland Avenue.

According to police, the driver had stopped to let passengers off and as he pulled away, the woman fell and was struck.

Prior to the accident, she had been returning home from one of her regular visits to a temple in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East.

“I was told that when she was about to get off from the bus she lost her balance,” he said. “And she actually fell down on the road.”

A spokesperson for the TTC said the operator currently is on leave pending an internal investigation of the incident.
