Video shot by a member of the music band Amparanoia shows smoke and flames of a forest fire blocking the motorway 80 kilometres south of the city of Ourense in northern Spain.

The fire raged on Thursday in the nearby city of Verin, forcing emergency services to seal off highways in the area as firefighters worked overnight, the band told Reuters, adding that the Spanish Police managed to evacuate them very quickly from the affected area.

On Friday firefighters continued to battle the blaze with 22 squads, 12 helicopters and four air planes.

Spain’s Military Emergency Unit is also providing support with 112 firefighters and 26 vehicles, the defence ministry said.

Due to the proximity of the fire to urban areas, authorities have declared alert level 2, one notch below the highest risk level 1.
