Saturday is Alberta Parks Day and the University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge have developed a unique way to mark the occasion.

It’s called BioBlitz 2017 and it’s a way for families to celebrate biodiversity, and to play a role in cataloging what can be found in Alberta’s newest provincial park.

“This will be a great family activity,” John Swann, a bio sciences technician at the University of Calgary, told me Sunday on the Alberta Morning News.

“My own family will be taking part.  We don’t know exactly what we’ll find because this is a new park.  I’m excited to think we might find a brand new species that we’ve never seen before in Alberta.”

“It will be a great way to learn about the ecosystem of the Canadian Rockies and spend time enjoying the summer with friends and family.”

The park in question is Castle Mountain Provincial Park.  It’s located about 1.5 hours west of Lethbridge, just south of the Castle Mountain Ski Resort.

The area was formally designated as a provincial park earlier this year.  You can find out more on the University of Calgary’s website.
