Hamilton’s hiring climate called ‘upbeat’: Report

Survey shows 20% of Hamilton area employers plan to hire for the upcoming third quarter of 2017.

A new report is describing Hamilton’s hiring climate as upbeat. The report, the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey, found that 20 per cent of Hamilton area employers plan to hire for the upcoming third quarter of this year.

Three per cent of employers anticipate cutbacks in the July — September period while 77 per cent plan to maintain their current staffing levels.

“With seasonal variations removed from the data, Hamilton’s third quarter net employment outlook of 17 per cent is a five percentage point increase when compared to the previous quarterly outlook,” said Erica Melarangeli of Manpower’s Stoney Creek office. “It is also an increase of five percentage points from the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a positive hiring pace for the upcoming months.”

Nationally, the survey shows employers expect a modest hiring climate in the third quarter.

“Nationally, the overall tone for the third quarter is one of cautious optimism,” said Darlene Minatel, vice-president, Manpower Canada operations and strategic accounts. “While the economy is still recovering from the effects of low oil prices, we’re seeing slow but steady job growth in many urban areas across the country, a positive sign for the months ahead.”
