B.C. election 2017: Burnaby-Edmonds riding

In 2013: NDP Raj Chouhan won this riding handily for a third straight time.

In 2009: Chouhan won this riding for a second straight time, defeating BC Liberal Lee Rankin by over 2,000 votes, 52-38 per cent.

History & Geography: Created in 1966, Burnaby-Edmonds is the south-easternmost of Burnaby’s ridings, bordered by Boundary Road and Imperial and 4th Streets. An NDP stronghold, it has gone to the party in 12 of the last 15 elections. The NDP’s history in this riding can be seen by the New Vista Care Home on Edmonds, named for Ernest Winch, the CCF MLA for Burnaby from 1933-1957.

Candidates

Liberals – Garrison Duke: A career coach and the founder of Pathsetter Career Coaching, Duke has worked for more than a decade in the employment services sector. He has served on the boards of the BC Multicultural Advisory Council, BC PLAN, and the SAGE Foundation.

NDP – Raj Chouhan: The shadow critic for multiculturalism, immigration, and human rights, Chouhan is originally from India. He was the founding president of the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union and served as a director of the Hospital Employees’ Union.

Greens – Valentine Wu: Wu was born in China and moved to Burnaby in 2001 as international student. He received his Master’s degree in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University and works as IT consultant.
