Metrolinx apologizes to TTC after denigrating office poll surfaces on Twitter

Metrolinx, Ontario’s regional transportation authority, has apologized to the Toronto Transit Commission after a photograph of an informal office poll denigrating the transit agency was shared on Twitter this week.

The image shows a whiteboard scribbled with the question, “How would you describe the TTC?” along with the headings “cesspool,” “terrible,” and “I like dirty subways.”

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins told Global News the poll was located on a staff cubicle and was quickly removed.

“It’s really unfortunate because that’s not reflective of how we feel about the TTC. They are our partner,” Aikins said.

“When the picture was tweeted, we immediately looked into it, located it, and removed it within half an hour.”

The poll also had a couple of comments scribbled on it which read “Hangin’ with the ‘great unwashed’ just builds a strong immune system” and “it’s awesome considering they have no $.”

Aikins said Metrolinx, which works closely with the TTC on a number of projects such as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and regional fare integration, isn’t taking the tongue-in-cheek poll lightly.

“Our entire senior management team has been made aware of it. Yes, they’ll talk to that individually staff member as well as the staff team,” Aikins said.

“We will treat it seriously with this particular staff person as well as all of our staff that this isn’t acceptable behaviour.”

The TTC said in a short statement that Metrolinx had reached out to them on the matter.

“The TTC was disappointed to see this. Metrolinx has apologized, the TTC has accepted their apology, and we’ve moved on,” the statement read.
