Countdown to St. F.X. faculty walkout after talks break down

ANTIGONISH, N.S. – Conciliation talks have broken down between faculty and the administration at St. Francis Xavier University.

The university says that the faculty walked out of talks on the weekend after rejecting the Nova Scotia school’s latest offer.

The conciliation report now goes to the provincial minister of labour, which triggers a 14-day countdown to a possible walkout.

University vice president Ramsay Duff says the administration has offered a four-year agreement with minimum annual salary increases of 1.5 per cent in the first two years of the deal.

That would be followed by a 1.75 per cent in year three and two per cent in the fourth year.

The union says in a news release that it presented a complete package of contract issues with modifications from its position in December and says the university isn’t showing a willingness to move its position.
