A Kelowna woman is still euphoric after winning big on the American TV game show The Price is Right.
In October, Joanie Murray traveled with her family to LA for a taping of the show.
The 25-year-old says her stepbrother is a big fan of the show so her family decided to test their luck on it.
“I remember as a kid watching it. It gets intense watching it because you can win big,” Murray said.
Murray’s family woke up at 2 a.m. and stood in line at 3 a.m. on the day of the taping. After an interview process, they were finally brought into the studio at 1:30 p.m.
Murray, who sat in the front row, was one of the first four contestants called up to contestant row, something she never thought would be possible.
“You always hope that you’ll get on the Price is Right,” she said with a laugh.
But she actually almost didn’t notice that her name had been called.
“We were just hugging all the contestants and cheering and all of a sudden, Robert taps me on the shoulder and said, ‘They called your name!’ I looked and said, ‘Omigod’. It was crazy!”
In the show, contestants must be the closest to guess the retail price of a product without going over.
After a quick consultation with her stepbrother Logan, who Murray says knows the game show “backwards, frontwards, upside down, inside out”, she came the closest to guessing the actual retail price of an iPhone 5.
When she reached host Drew Carey, Murray says she felt like she was in a dream.
“I’m up there. I’m nervous. I can’t stand still. Honestly it happened so fast,” she said.
But the dream experience became even better when the announcer said she would be playing to win a 2013 Ford Mustang.
Murray would win the car if she guessed the correct price tag of the car from five different prices. After playing another game, she won three guesses.
Murray says she trusted Logan to help her guess correctly.
“I remember thinking, ‘do I go with the higher [price]’? But I looked at Logan and he was pointing and I was like, if this is wrong, it will be his fault, not mine so I’m going to go with his guess.”
She ultimately won on her third and final guess.
“When [host] Drew Carey pulled the price tag down and it said win, I didn’t even believe it was real. I still don’t.”
“My stepbrother talked about how all he wanted to do was get on the Price is Right and win a Mustang and I got on the Price is Right and won a Mustang,” she laughs.
Murray says the experience is one she will never forget.
“My head by the end of it was pounding because I was screaming all day. I had been up since 3 a.m. I couldn’t sit still. Oh it was crazy! It went so fast and it takes a while to sink in.”
The Price is Right episode aired on January 3. Murray says she had to stay mum about her experience until the air date. Contestants have to wait three months before picking up their prizes so it could be April before she gets her car. She notes that she does not know whether or how much tax she will have to pay on the vehicle.
“Everyone dreams about it and it’s crazy that it actually happened to me. I never thought it would happen to me. I don’t have car so I’m really excited that I won one.”
