Montreal city workers repairing water main burst in Plateau

MONTREAL – City work crews were working early Wednesday to repair an overnight water main burst in the Plateau district, just northeast of Lafontaine Park.

“We got the call around 2:30 a.m.,” to de Lorimier Ave. between Marie-Anne St. E. and Mount Royal Ave. E., Constable Anie Lemieux of Montreal police said.

With repair staff on site, police had withdrawn from the waterlogged scene – where water had been streaming into the storm-drainage system – by 6 a.m., Lemieux said.

At 7:40 a.m., the surface water flow had ceased.

With an earth mover starting to dig, traffic along de Lorimier was barred in both directions, after earlier having been kept open northbound.

Central-city spokesperson Jacques-Alain Lavallée referred all inquiries to Michel Tanguay, a spokesperson for the Plateau-Mont Royal borough.

Tanguay did not immediately return a phone call or emails seeking details.

One media report that the burst pipe is 20 cm in diameter could not be independently confirmed.

The date of installation for the defective pipe also was not immediately available.

Nor could it be determined whether any homes had lost their water supply.
