Revelstoke RCMP save eagle

A bald eagle is getting a second chance at life after being rescued by Revelstoke RCMP.

The bird, suffering from a damaged wing, was rescued by two police officers last Friday after it was spotted struggling near Illecillewaet River and Simpson Street.

The eagle was named Illy.

“After a phone a few calls and inquiries on how best to assist Illy, Cst. Mark Williams and Cpl. Blakney put a plan into place,” staff sergeant Kurt Grabinsky said.

“Illy was quite easily influenced with the pieces of salmon and in a Canadian like way, a hockey stick was used, not only to strategically place the fish but was able to hold her in place while Michael Morris placed a blanket over her.”

Grabinsky said Illy was transported to the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops where she was assessed by medical staff who diagnosed her with a fractured wing and anemia.

He said Illy will require a blood transfusion, and hopefully make a full recovery. The expectation is to return Illy to the Illecillewaet River area.

“The Revelstoke RCMP would like to thank all those involved, including the city of Revelstoke Animal Control Enforcement Officers and the medical staff at the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops, BC, including the Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre where Illy and other injured animals are being cared for,” Grabinsky said.
