It has been unseasonably cold across the prairies since Monday Dec. 6, but a mild reprieve is expected.
Since Dec. 5, 2016, wind chill values in Calgary have hovered between -21 to -34. The actual temperature has not made it above -16 C.
On Dec. 8, 2016, Calgary hit it’s coldest temperature in over 1,000 days, at -26.7 C.

As of Sunday night this has been the longest cold snap in Calgary in almost four years. When you look at the mean temperature, (the average temperature in a day), Calgary has had a mean temperature of at least -20 C for six days. The last time the weather was that cold for that long was December 22 to 27, 2012.
It has been so cold that parking metres in the city have frozen, electrical usage records across the province have been broken, and you could even turn water into ice instantly.
Enjoy the Heat
The good news is, temperatures in Calgary December 12 to 14, should be eight to ten degrees warmer than they have been for the past week.
While this arctic air mass will continue to dominate, it should be warm enough that students will have a chance to enjoy outdoor recesses and lunches for the first time since the beginning of December.

Forecasted daytime highs are expected to be closer to seasonal overnight lows for Monday through Wednesday, however long-range models suggest another dip is likely by Thursday.
Since Dec. 6, Environment Canada has been issuing extreme cold warnings throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia. Temperatures in some areas hit -30 C with wind chill values around -40. For a look at current watches and warnings click here.
