Homes in north and northwest Regina were left in the dark Sunday morning after a power outage struck many neighbourhoods.

SaskPower could not be reached for an interview, but tweeted the loss of electricity was caused by a transmission problem. Police said parts of the city lost power as early as 6:30 a.m. CT. Many locals reported their loss of electricity started around 8 a.m.

The outage included places in Rochdale, such as Sobey’s and Pet Valu, which both said they lost some business.

“It was a little bit hectic trying to get everything set up,” Cailey Schneider, a Pet Valu sales associate, said. “People were showing up at the door and it was trying to turn them away.”

“There were a few people speeding through the red lights, no lights, but mostly people were coming to a stop. Mostly people knew what to do,” said Josh Mishak, who noticed the power outage on his drive to work.

Joy Prince said she had a security light that comes on during power outages, as well as candles and blankets that are handy.

“Everything I need is basically at the house, ready if we need it,” she said. “As long as my cell phone is charged, I’m good to go.”

SaskPower tweeted that power was fully restored around 10:30 a.m.

The Crown corporation commends having a kit for unplanned outages. It should include a gallon of water per day for each member of your household, non-perishable foods, flashlights with extra batteries and blankets.

Most residents were good-natured about the power outage, noting that the weather wasn’t too cold yet so heat wasn’t a problem. The most common complaint was an inability to make coffee.
