Alleged drunk driver knocks out power pole in Kelowna

Police say A Kelowna man is lucky to be alive after colliding head on with a hydro pole Thursday afternoon.

The single vehicle collision happened on Springfield Road near Graham Road.  Police say the grey Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck veered across the centre line and then collided with the power pole. Witnesses told police that the truck had been driven erratically prior to the crash.

Police say they detected signs of intoxication during conversation with the driver following the crash.  As a result, the 23-year-old man was taken into police custody but refused to provide breath samples.  He was issued driving prohibitions under the Motor Vehicle Act and faces potential charges. The man will be in court in March.

Police say the incident serves as a good reminder to stay safe on the roads as we enter the holiday season.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe,” RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “So, speak up against impaired driving, don’t let loved ones put themselves or others at risk. If you think someone on the road may be impaired, call 911.”
