What will the weather be like in Calgary on Halloween when kids begin trick-or-treating?

The forecast is shaping up to be fairly moderate with little chance of rain or snow.

Sunset in Calgary on Oct. 31, 2016 will occur at around 6:14 p.m., and the temperature should be around 4 C by the time kids head out to get their fill of candy.

Looking back at the past 50 years of Halloween weather, Environment Canada records show Calgary is more likely to have an unseasonably warm end to the month, with 20 of the past 50 years showing double-digit daytime highs on Halloween. However, you are almost as likely to have an unseasonably cold Halloween with 19 days out of 50 recording below-seasonal daytime highs.

MAKING HISTORY

If the lyrics “wake me up before you go-go, don’t leave me hanging on like a Yo-Yo” mean anything to you, then you were probably around for the coldest Halloween Calgary has ever had.

In 1984, Halloween fell in the middle of a historical cold snap, with temperatures hovering between -24 C to -27 C from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1. It was the coldest Halloween on record at just -26 C.

Conversely, if you remember when Peter Gunn debuted on television, then you might have enjoyed Calgary’s warmest Halloween on record; in 1958, the peak temperature on Halloween was 21.1 C.

HALLOWEEN AROUND ALBERTA

Forecast models show areas south of Calgary are likely to see some rain and possibly some mixed precipitation for much of the day.

Snow is possible in the north and central areas of the province as well.

In other words, we are likely to see a number of costumes at least partially hidden under layers this year.
