WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Bisons football team introduced a new recruit as they prepare for a must win game on Saturday when they host the Regina Rams to close out the regular season.

The Bisons announced the commitment of linebacker/long snapper Brody Williams for the 2017 season.

Williams, 17, hails from Oakbank and is currently playing in the Winnipeg High School Football League for the St. Paul’s Crusaders. Williams chose to stay at home but was sought after by a number of schools north and south of the border.

“Canada there was about five (schools) and then when we went to the U.S., I went to mini camps down in the states for the past three, four years,” said Williams. “So I’ve been heavily recruited down in the States and after going through multiple teams there, and getting multiple visits, I decided the best thing for me, and the best option for me is probably stay at home.”

Williams has been a starter and defensive captain on the Crusaders the past three seasons. He recorded 22.5 defensive tackles with 13.5 special teams tackles and one forced fumble this season.

“He’s very physical,” said head coach Brian Dobie.

“You look at him, he’s way ahead of the curve in terms of the work that he’s done to prepare for where he is now as a grade 12 star in high school football and moving into university.”

The Bisons sit in fifth place in Canada West entering the final week of the regular season with only the top four teams to qualify for the playoffs.

The University of Manitoba also announced the return of a women’s golf team in the fall of 2017 after a five year hiatus. The program was on hold after the 2011 season due to what the school called a “lack of female golfers in Manitoba”. Former Bisons team member Bri-ann Tokariwski will be their head coach while Garth Goodbrandson will remain the head coach of the men’s team.
