Power outages force the closure of mall, library on Halifax peninsula

Sunday shoppers and library goers were left in the dark on Sunday after power outages forced the closure of a number of businesses on the Halifax peninsula.

The Halifax Shopping Centre announced via social media that they had lost power at around 1 p.m. as shoppers were escorted out of the building.

A few hours later, they announced that they would remain closed for the rest of the day.

More than 2,000 customers were also affected by outages in the downtown area, including the Halifax Central Library.

Blustery winds also caused the temporary closure of Young St. as crews dealt with some downed power lines.

The outages also caused havoc on a number of intersections including the ones along Bayers Road, Mumford Road and Joseph Howe Drive.

Halifax Regional Police took to social media to remind motorists to treat the affected areas as 4-way stops, adding that “traffic (was) a mess.”

According to Nova Scotia Power, the cause of these outages remains under investigation.
