A 34-year-old man has been slapped with several charges after a bizarre series of events in West Kelowna Wednesday night.
Devon Jonah Sims apparently approached a stranger’s home just before midnight and said he was in medical distress. When ambulance crews arrived and started treating Sims, police said he pushed his way into the stranger’s home, allegedly assaulted the homeowner, stole a cell phone and fled the scene.
About a half hour later, RCMP said Sims used the stolen phone to call 911. Police tracked the call and subsequently found and arrested Sims.
“With the assistance of Police Service Dog Ice, the suspect was located and taken into police custody without incident,” Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a news release.
Sims appeared in court on Thursday and has been charged with assault, break-and-enter with intent to commit an offence, theft under $5,000 and breach of probation.
He remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is being asked to call RCMP.
